德国艺术家用圣乔治屠魔这一主题象征自己的精神

　　下面这幅海报是位于德国的艺术家聚居地 Darmstadt（自由城市）的最后一次作品展览的宣传海报。

This is the dramatic poster for the final exhibition of the Darmstadt artists' colony, which was founded in 1899 by the Grand Duke of Hesse to promote the arts in his west-central German kingdom. Leading artists including Peter Behrens, Josef Maria Ohlbrich and Hans Christiansen were founding members.

Hoetger, an expressionist artist and sculptor, chose the theme of St. George slaying the dragon to represent the spirit of the embattled artists' colony.

　　enbattled 是陷入困境的意思。这个艺术家聚居地可能在经营或其它问题上遇到了困难，不得不解散，于是举办了最后一次作品展（the final exhibition）。海报作者选择英雄圣乔治杀死杜拉根兽作为主题，应该是想表达这些艺术家不屈服于世俗的困难、决心继续进行艺术探索的精神。

　　这幅作品还被做成了邮票。

　　1977年出版的《德国艺术文献：自由城市，1901-1976年》第二卷“艺术与装饰 1851-1914”收录了一座雕塑作品，描绘圣乔治正在刺杀杜拉根兽。

　　另一件可能和自由城市有关的作品，介绍它的网页提到了 Darmstadt+1914。这个一战勋章的正面描绘一个武士正在劈杀三头杜拉根兽（hydra）。

　　勋章正面有文字 Das Grosse Dreschen，还没有搞清楚其含义；背面的文字 Lieb Vaterland, magst rvhig sein（亲爱的祖国请放心）是德国军歌“守望莱茵”中的一句歌词。
